A Complete Guide to Construction Drone Photography

Posted on September 30, 2019 by Chirag Patel

Construction drone photography is gaining momentum. For one, it is an easier method that helps draw attention towards the intricacies involved in this industry, and allows proper inspection and checking methods.

However, the use of drones is still in the nascent stage, and you ought to understand the drones completely to be able to use them. here we will talk about how to use drones, what to consider when buying them, and what all things you need to keep in mind when using drones for construction site photography.

The choice of hardware, software and licenses is important for the right choice of drone. You should also ensure that drone photography is scalable, and reliable, so that you get optimal output.

  • We shall begin with the choice of hardware for the construction site drone photography. The drone choice depends on the survey area that you are planning to run it through. For instance, in case you are surveying a 200 hectare area, then you should choose the multicopter. In case the area is larger than that, then you could go for multiple multicopters or a fixed wing UAV. The next factor to consider would be the budget. What amount would you want to set aside for the drone hardware. In case you are conducting a bit more than drone roof inspection, you might need a bigger hardware, and the budget would automatically increase. So, if you are planning on multicopters, then it would work out to be cheaper as compared to the fixed wing UAV
    • Apart from the budget and the area that you are planning to survey, the next factor that you need to consider is how much maintenance will the drone take up, and how easy it is to provide maintenance. For instance, will you be able to maintain the hardware yourself or, do you need someone to take care of the same? In case you need to replace the drone, then would you be able to do it without any issue or, do you think you will not find the drones easily available?
  • The next thing you need to consider when buying a drone for construction drone photography is the camera. You should choose one with at least 20MP sensor so that you can capture the shots better. If you are planning on using the interchangeable lens, then you need to think again. They might seem like an interesting purchase, but they can lower the quality of the data.
    • The camera should be bought keeping in mind the ground sample distance and resolution
  • The next consideration when investing in drone roof inspection is the software. There is a lot of complexity involved in the construction site photography, which is why the choice of software should be made wisely. You should act upon your needs-whether it is a simple surveying software or a visualization software that you need to complete your surveying.
  • You should also keep a track of the progress you have made with the drones, and how ably you have considered each shot.
